Speak

Huskies don’t bark a whole lot, the “woo-woo”. It’s a low throaty growl that’s sometimes singsongy. Juneau has a “I want to go outside” woo, a “scratch me” woo and a “play with me” woo that all are distinctly different. She often woo-es instead of barking when I tell her to speak.

She also talks by this soft ever so quiet “oof” which makes her lips quiver…its really funny to watch:

Of course body language is the final key is it not? Who could dispute what she wants here:

waiting

Just waiting around for the UPS guy to come…and waiting and waiting and waiting. Once I get my rental order, it’s on the road again, down past Atlanta, GA to shoot a wedding for this fun couple. I’m really sick of all the traveling (if you haven’t noticed) but this one should be fun because my Dad and brother are riding with me. They’re sneaking in a mini vacation so I don’t have to drive in scary Atlanta by myself. A small mention of 6 lane highways is a nightmarish thought for me, so I’m very grateful that they can come!

Juneau looks sad but I promise we aren’t beating our dog. She’s been lethargic and mopey so I took her to the vet and it turns out dogs can get urinary track infections (who knew?). I left appropriate signage for charley so he can remember to give her meds while I’m gone.

I’ve been super sad and lethargic too, but it’s because of a certain electric company that shut the power off in the neighborhood and fried my surge protector. I thought it fried the computer and we couldn’t get it to turn on for a few days but my super hubby figured out that it was just the surge protector and saved the day…and then my heart decided it could beat again after all.

A global triangle

I can’t get enough of stripes, plaids and diamonds/ Kilms and rough fibers/ Native American to Mexican prints. all coming together to create a homespun earthy room full of visual geometric delight. Mix it with something modern and clean and it’s not too rustic.

What's your take on it?

Patisserie

The hubby is now working as a full time pastry chef for a resort. He gets to make a whole bunch of tiny desserts for banquets and such as well as daily breakfast breads. He took some (not so yummy looking) pictures from his phone. Some of the things he’s been making are chocolate truffles, marzipan cakes, hazelnut stuff, tarts, banana pudding cups, lemon squares. tiramisu and etc.. He told me the exact names of everything but I’ve forgotten already : )  Bottom right corner is an unfinished s’mores dessert. It has a campfire shaped sugar decoration that goes on top and he brushes caramel on the plate with the spoon, however in this one it made a perfect slug! mmm right?

What else goes on in ol Scruggerville? Aside from working and being on the go, we were able to visit friends in family in Columbia. While staying there, we came back in the evening to find it pouring rain and we er…oops…left the dogs outside. Juneau didn’t mind but Anooshe wanted to come back inside. That’s what the video is of plus a little clip back home of Juneau and a paper bag.

Psycho killer kat continues to live in Zack’s mattress. The box spring has a hole in the bottom so she scurries around in her secret hiding place and lashes out if you walk to near. She’s started intimidating the dog, running up to it and banging her claw on the ground. Juneau thinks she wants to play so I’m afraid for her eyes getting scratched. Meanest cat ever.

We really should have done this when we moved in but I finally took a day to bleach everything: the windows, doors and baseboards. It makes a huge difference in cleanliness levels and all you have to sacrifice is a pair of lungs and the ability to breath for a few hours.

Oh and you know that cool shelf we put on the wall. Well it fell down… on Charley... in his sleep. We had that whole Sarah-thought-there-was-a-stud-here-but-come-to-find-out-there's-not thing when we assembled them. The instructions say the stud can be off centered so we were like well we’ll just see if it holds. It didn’t. I’m very bummed that we have no bookshelf now.

We tried a new church this morning but the pastor spoke in super fast auctioneers speed. I found my brain whirling as I tried to keep up, but perhaps that was the lack of caffeine. Charley sneakily replaced my caffeinated coffee with decaf coffee. I’ve been complaining loudly all week that I just can’t seem to wake up in the morning and he finally mentioned his crime. I guess it didn’t hurt me.

All day Saturday was spent looking for a new job since I’m closing down my business. I have an interview tomorrow and made a good contact in the art world while I was out. I applied at 10 different places ranging from hotel lobby reception to clothing retail. It seems pretty easy around here to get a job waitressing but I can’t see myself hearing to well in a crowded room. I’m really hoping one of these works out.

more cartooning ideas for Juneau

I watch my little dog everyday and she’s become such a familiar face that it’s hard for me to portray her. I also feel like there are a billion different options for cartooning styles. Every now and again, I’ll sit at my desk and doodle her for effect, thinking about how to simplify her behavior and quirks. Once I get the “character board” down, I want to work on creating the art form; making her move on paper and speak with pen strokes. This post contained phase one, remember these?

Here are the new one’s (or some rather). Disney style (just for a laugh, because I’d hate to copycat Balto):

these next two happened and the look more like pig and terrier. O’well, I’m experimenting, it doesn’t matter.

A few sketches happened one piece of paper- Juneau with eyelashes, skinny snouted Juneau, buggeyed cartoon Juneau.

DSC_0270 (2)DSC_0272 (2)DSC_0273 (2)DSC_0112

then I realized that none of these look remotely like Juneau, but this one really hits home. Why? For starters, I was messing up her ears earlier. She also sits like this all the time, and the blank eyes give me that cold husky stare (but I’d probably fill them with color, one blue /one brown.) I think I have one thing to work with for now. Where I go beyond this point will probably be derived from this Juneau:

Unless Juneau starts giving me any insight.

Another thing I am doing is studying her movements. Call it a self taught animation series Smilebut it’s the beginning of a project I’ve had in mind for some time now. Hopefully you’ll be around to see it launch!

I’ve always been fascinated by animation. Freshman year of high school, I made a whole sequence of a horse running and jumping at three different angels. I drew each sequence on tracing paper so I could reference the movement before. I found a few of them in my old sketchbook so I’ll put a few here…they are on tracing paper and in a very rough form.  I wish I still had the video where I choppily strung them together so you could see, but it perished in the grave of old computerland. My over ambitious little self had wanted to see it the whole way out, but I never got around to cell shading them in the computer for a finished product.

The first one is the character sheet, all of my proportions where made from this drawing.

DSC_0274DSC_0272DSC_0268DSC_0273DSC_0270DSC_0269

To get the movements/ gaits right, I spent time watching the horses next to my grandparents farm as well as looking up gait studies that other people had drawn. Juneau runs entirely different from a horse of course, but I’d like to do the whole gait study with her and improve on things like skin movement and weight shifts.

And yes, you may be wondering why I need to further animate my dog when I already have every little thing captured by camera. I’m just weird like that.
